There is no single price for learning medical coding or billing. Cost depends on whether the program is a noncredit course from a training provider or a credit-bearing program at a college, and on what is bundled. The figures below come from this directory's published records, October 2026. They describe the programs we list, not the whole market, and only include prices where we found the quoted figure on the provider's own page.
Comprehensive noncredit-style programs
For comprehensive programs where a full price is published (43 programs):
| Measure | Published full price |
|---|---|
| Lowest | $900 |
| Median | $3,295 |
| Highest | $7,500 |
The spread is large, so a price alone tells you little. Differences usually come from what is included: instructor access, practice exams, an exam voucher, books, career services and the length of access. Across the 108 offerings with a voucher field in our records, 43 include a voucher, 11 do not, 1 offers it as an add-on, and for 53 the status is not published.
Credit-bearing and academic programs
Academic programs price differently, and the units are not interchangeable:
| Pricing basis | Programs | Range published |
|---|---|---|
| Per credit | 11 | $46 to $530 per credit |
| Total program cost stated as full price | 16 | $1,564 to $31,800 |
| Per-credit figures that were stated as a total | 3 | $553.80 to $1,468.20 |
| Books as a stated total | 1 | $500 |
| One-time fees | 2 | $300 to $400 |
| Other total | 1 | $7,000 |
To compare a per-credit price with a full price, multiply by the number of credits and add fees, and note that in-district, in-state and out-of-state rates can differ. We do not convert them for you because the credit counts vary by program. Treat this table as a map of how prices are published, not as an expected cost.
What is usually not in the sticker price
- Exam fees. For reference, AHIMA states the CCA exam costs $199 for members and $299 for non-members, and the CCS exam $299 for members and $399 for non-members. For AAPC and NHA credentials, check the issuers' current fees at aapc.com and nhanow.com.
- Membership dues required or recommended by an issuer.
- Code books and software. Some providers include them, some require you to buy current-year editions.
- Retakes. AHIMA states retake fees match the exam cost for the CCS; check each issuer.
- Renewal and continuing education after you earn a credential.
- Technology such as a reliable computer and internet connection.
See exam vouchers, books and membership costs for details.
Paying for it
Payment plans are recorded for 21 programs; for the other listed programs it is not published. Federal student aid generally applies to eligible programs at participating institutions, not to most standalone noncredit courses; our records show federal aid available at 4 programs, not available at 6, and not published for 146. See understanding financial assistance. Ask whether a payment plan charges interest or fees, and how refunds work if you stop.
How to calculate your own total
- Start with tuition or the per-credit total.
- Add the exam fee for the credential you want, including membership if required.
- Add books, software and any required supplies.
- Subtract anything the provider says is included, such as a voucher, in writing.
- Add a margin for a retake, if you want a conservative number.
Is a higher price better?
Not on the evidence we hold. We have not tested these courses and do not have outcome data that would let us say a more expensive course performs better. A higher price may buy more support or a bundled voucher; it may not. Use how to compare online training and judge each program against your goals.
