Tuition is only part of the cost of getting a medical coding or billing credential. The exam itself costs money, and so can books, memberships, retakes and renewal. Providers describe these inconsistently, so this guide shows what to look for and what our records say.
What a voucher is
A voucher (sometimes called an exam attempt, exam fee waiver or exam seat) is a prepaid payment toward an exam fee. Providers that include one are covering the fee for the credential issuer's exam. A voucher is not the credential, does not mean you are eligible to sit the exam, and does not guarantee a pass. You still have to meet the issuer's requirements and pass the exam.
What listed programs say about vouchers
Across the 108 offerings with a voucher field in this directory's published records (October 2026; the figures describe listed programs, not the whole market):
| Voucher status | Programs |
|---|---|
| Included | 43 |
| Not included | 11 |
| Optional add-on | 1 |
| Not published | 53 |
"Not published" means we could not confirm the answer from the provider's own pages. It does not mean the voucher is excluded. Ask the provider before you pay.
Exam fees where we have confirmed them
AHIMA's current pages state:
- CCA exam: $199 for AHIMA members and $299 for non-members.
- CCS exam: $299 for members and $399 for non-members; retake fees match the exam cost.
For AAPC (CPC, CPB) and NHA (CBCS) exams, we could not confirm current fees from the issuers, so we do not state them. Check aapc.com and nhanow.com. Be wary of any fee quoted on a third-party page without a date.
Membership
Some issuers have members and non-members, and fees differ, as AHIMA's published pricing shows. An issuer may also require membership before you can schedule an exam. Whether that applies depends on the issuer, so verify it on the issuer's current page. Also ask whether a course bundle includes a first-year membership, and whether it renews automatically at a higher price.
Books and code sets
Coding work uses annually updated code sets. Ask:
- Are books or digital access included with the course?
- Which year's edition is included, and what happens when the edition changes?
- Are books permitted in the exam? Policies differ by issuer and change over time; check the issuer's page for the exam you plan to take.
- Is there a separate fee for encoder or practice-management software?
For credit courses, textbooks may be billed separately. Our records show a published book total of $500 for one academic program, and one-time fees of $300 to $400 for two others.
Retakes
If you do not pass, you may need to pay again. Ask what the issuer charges and whether your course includes a retake voucher. AHIMA's CCS retake fee equals the exam fee. For other issuers, check their pages.
Renewal and continuing education
Credentials expire unless renewed. AHIMA states that its CCA and CCS credentials have a 2-year certification period and require continuing education units and a recertification fee. Other issuers have their own cycles; confirm current requirements for any credential you plan to hold. These are ongoing costs that no course covers.
Questions to ask before you enroll
- Does the price include the exam fee? For which exam, and for how many attempts?
- Does the voucher expire? Is it tied to completing the course within a time limit?
- What does a voucher not cover: membership, application fees, books?
- If I do not use the voucher, can I get a refund or credit?
- What are my total expected costs through the exam, in writing?
